A guide to keeping on top of your child's smile
As we head into the final quarter of 2024, parents are busy ensuring their children have everything they need to end this year on a high! But one important aspect that often gets overlooked is dental health. At Greenlaw Dental, we believe a healthy smile is essential for a child’s confidence and overall well-being, especially at school.
At our practice in Paisley, we have Dentists who specialise in Child Smiles and are here to answer any questions you or your child may have about their oral hygiene.
In this blog post, we’ll explore how you can help your child maintain a bright, healthy smile throughout the school year, including tips for good oral hygiene habits, how to handle dental emergencies at school, and the best snacks for healthy teeth.
Establishing Good Oral Hygiene Habits:
Good oral hygiene begins at home, and it’s crucial to establish a solid routine that children can follow even during the busy school year. Starting with the following strong, long-lasting dental habits:
- Morning and Evening Brushing - Make sure your child brushes their teeth for two minutes twice a day, once in the morning and again before bed. Use fluoride toothpaste to help protect against cavities. For younger children, parents may need to supervise or assist with brushing to ensure they reach all areas of the mouth.
- Flossing Daily - It’s important to teach children to floss at least once a day to remove food particles and plaque from between the teeth, which a toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing can begin as early as they have two teeth that touch.
- Regular Dental Check-Ups - Schedule routine check-ups with your dentist at least once a year. These visits not only help catch any issues early on but also reinforce the importance of maintaining good dental habits.
Packing Tooth-Friendly Snacks:
What children eat during school hours can have a big impact on their oral health. Sugary snacks and drinks can increase the risk of cavities, especially if children are snacking throughout the day without brushing. Here are some healthier options that are better for their teeth:
- Fresh Fruits and Vegetables - Crunchy fruits like apples and veggies like carrots help clean the teeth naturally and are packed with essential nutrients.
- Cheese and Yogurt - Dairy products are high in calcium and phosphorus, which help strengthen tooth enamel and neutralise acids produced by bacteria.
- Water - Encourage your child to drink water throughout the day instead of sugary drinks like juice or soda. Water helps rinse away food particles and reduces the risk of tooth decay.
Handling Dental Emergencies at School:
Accidents can happen, especially on the playground. It’s important to be prepared for any dental emergencies that may arise while your child is at school.
- Knocked-Out Tooth - If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to find it, rinse it with clean water, and place it back in the socket if possible. If this isn’t feasible, store it in milk or saliva and seek emergency dental care immediately.
- Chipped or Broken Tooth - Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact your dentist as soon as possible to repair the tooth.
- Toothache - If your child complains of a toothache at school, have them rinse with warm saltwater and apply a cold compress to the outside of their mouth. Schedule a visit to the dentist to determine the cause of the pain.
A bright, healthy smile can give your child the confidence they need to excel in the classroom and beyond. When children feel good about their smile, they’re more likely to participate in activities, engage with peers, and perform better academically. At Greenlaw Dental, we focus on preventative care and education, helping both parents and children understand the importance of oral health and empowering kids to take charge of their dental routine.
